We must not let our cultural biases get in the way of understanding the lives of other people &mdash a difficult task given the emotionally charged feelings and beliefs that most people have concerning race and ethnicity. We’ll discuss historical and social interpretations of cultural diversity, consequences of social inequality, prejudice, and discrimination, and political and economic dynamics. Attention is focused on the recognition and appreciation of multiculturalism, particularly the nurturance of sensitivity and tolerance toward individual differences. We’ll learn to follow a cultural relativity approach to objectively analyze the phenomena of race and ethnicity and worldwide patterns of discrimination.
